Foundation is Open for Business

Applications for 2021 Scholarships are now being accepted by the Sandbox Foundation.

Applications can be downloaded by Clicking Here, or from the foundation’s application page on it’s web site at: http://sandboxfoundation.org/index.php/applications/

Students may submit applications between January 1st and March 1st of each year.

Roughly thirty applications are received annually, with Romeo High School providing the dominant portion of submissions.  The foundation’s charter promises to grant four scholarships each year, while it typically awards six or more.  Historically, the smallest grant has been a first year $2500 award.

The Sandbox Foundation is unique in that it reserves at least one grant each year as a “Continuing Scholarship”, to be given as a 2nd, 3rd or 4th college year award to a prior first year scholarship recipient of the foundation.

Past recipients have come from Romeo, Dakota, Utica, De Lasalle, and L’anse Creuse North high schools. The foundation focuses primarily on graduating seniors from Macomb County, Michigan.

Two more Scholarships Granted

There is no doubt that 2020 will go down in history as one of the weirdest years in most people’s lives.  The same can be said for many businesses, organizations and certainly the Sandbox Foundation itself.  Due to Covid-19 restrictions, Sandbox Foundation advisors were unable to hold their spring fundraiser.  Likewise, not a single Sandbox Foundation scholarship was awarded in person, thus far for 2020.

Recently, advisors of the foundation reviewed the financial status of the organization and elected to award two more college scholarships.  At this time, we proudly announce sisters Olivia and Sophia Schultz will be awarded grants from the foundation.

Olivia is being awarded a Barbara Faye Scholarship, while Sophia is being awarded a Wayne Scholarship.

Both sisters will be attending Western Michigan this fall.  We look forward to hearing from the Schultz sisters as they attend college during these most interesting Covid-19 times.

The Kuchenmeister Family Scholarship has been awarded for more than twenty years and is the predecessor of the Sandbox Foundation. All recipients of the Kuchenmeister Family Scholarship are also eligible to apply for the Sandbox Foundation’s “Continuing Scholarship“.

Gavin Kirsh, 2020 Barbara Faye Scholarship

Romeo High School 2020 graduate Gavin Kirsch proudly displays his Barbara Faye scholarship notice, in his Cap and Gown. Gavin is headed to Ferris State University to study Construction Management.

Below is a Gavin’s reply to Sandbox Foundation advisors.

I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for choosing  me as the recipient of the Barbara Faye Scholarship. It is a great honor that you have chosen me out of all of the qualified applicants.  I feel greatly blessed to receive this generous scholarship in order to further my education. I look forward to having the opportunity to meet with you so I may thank you in person.

Brooke Bennett, Inspiration Scholarship 2020

Brooke Bennett accepts a 2020 Inspiration Scholarship, on her way to Hope College. Below she sends a note to the foundation.

I would like to thank you so much for this opportunity. I very much look forward to being able to thank you in person for such a generous contribution to my education. It means a great deal to myself and my family that there are foundations like yours looking out for the futures of students like me. I am so very excited to be spending my next four years at a place like Hope where everyone is a family and community is so important. I chose Hope because it reminded me so much of my home in Romeo. I have attached a photo from my first official visit to Hope where I immediately knew that Hope would be my place for the next four years.

Natali Mladenovik receives 2nd Continuing Scholarship

Natali has been working hard to fast-track her education, at Oakland University. Below she responds the announcement she has received another “Continuing Scholarship”.

I am honored to be selected as a recipient of such a generous foundation. The Kuchenmeister family continues to bless my family, allowing me to continue pursuing my higher education. I have applied to numerous scholarships and never heard back. With this foundation, my voice and my financial concerns are heard. Thus, my dream to become a practicing lawyer can be achieved. Words cannot describe the gratitude I have for the Kuchenmeister family. I am thankful to both Mr. and Mrs. Kuchenmeister and to God for introducing us. Their generosity inspires me, and I look forward to applying such kind and generous morals throughout my personal life. In light of the current economic situation with COVID-19, this scholarship is especially touching. I am so grateful for this opportunity, thank you again to the Kuchenmeister family for this generous gift.

Natalie Mladenovik and Parker Brown

Continuing Scholarship recipients typically join foundation advisors at the Wine and Cheese fundraiser, held annually on the Friday before Mother’s Day.  Unfortunately, this year’s event has been postponed due to COVID-19 Stay-at-Home orders as well.  Foundation advisors anticipate rescheduling the event later this year.

Update: Audrey Fouts (SVSU)

The foundation receives it’s first update from Audrey Fouts;

Audrey proud to be a SVSU Cardinal

I am into my second semester here at Saginaw Valley State University. I have more classes this semester requiring more study time. Classes are going great and I am keeping my grades up. I was granted early admission into the College of Education and expect to start those classes in the next two semesters. I love living on campus for the convenience of classes, study groups, and all of the activities they offer! I am getting involved on campus through various volunteer opportunities. One group I am involved in is called Cardinal to Cardinal where we mentor other students.
I am very thankful for the Kuchenmeister family and Sandbox Foundation for providing me with this scholarship, giving me the opportunity to attend SVSU. I have been able to focus on school without the burden of financial needs. Thank you for being a part of my success in college. Go Cardinals!
